Monitoring Awareness of and Attitudes to Depression in Australia

Previous surveys of the Australian community’s knowledge of depression have shown that most people have little specific knowledge about depression or the effective pharmacological or psychological interventions available.

However, the community has reported a preference for self-help strategies and expressed negative attitudes towards pharmacological interventions. Consistent with these views, people report that they prefer to consult family and friends, and other community-based supports, rather than general healthcare professionals or mental health experts.
